Umande Trust

 http://www.umande.org/

Umande Trust is a rights-based agency, which believes that modest resources can significantly improve access to water and sanitation services if financial resources are strategically invested in support of community-led plans and actions. Our mission is to be the partner of choice in transforming water supply, sanitation and environmental services in close partnership with communities in Kenya’s urban centres.
Ramogi Osewe- Umande Trust
`Umande’ is the Kiswahili term for dew - connoting a new, unbiased, nascent beginning; not recycling the ideas of yesteryears.  Prof. Saad Yahya and the founding trustees settled on this brand because of the growing disillusionment with business-as-usual approaches to develo
pment .   They desired an agency that would experiment, dream, and adapt innovative processes and methods to learning from, sharing and transforming with urban communities.
Umande brings together teams of resource persons who share a passion and commitment to learn from, share and achieve lasting change with people.  This team comprises community organizers, academics, geo-informatics, urban planning, human rights, civil engineering, social scientists, environmental, gender, youth and enterprise development resource persons Team members have several years of experience from diverse research, civil society and public sector agencies .
Since 2004, Umande Trust has facilitated community organizing for independent action but also to demand fairness, accountability and competent services. The agency espouses five key objectives:-
  • To support in the capacity building of community organizations and/or federations in order to enable them effectively manage and sustain water and sanitation resources and services;
  • To facilitate the planning, building, and maintenance of community-based water and environmental sanitation services;
  • To promote the introduction, adaptation, development and application of best practices for improved delivery of water and sanitation services;
  • To conduct action-based research and policy advocacy programmes on key issues related to water, sanitation and the environment;
  • To promote the adoption of information and communication resources and technologies in order to support local communities in pursuit of the above objects.

Our Values

  • Foster values of democracy and inclusive governance in our work, within us and all those with whom we work
  • Uphold financial probity, integrity and accountability;
  • Place ceilings on clearly stated, flexible and mutually appreciated performance standards;
  • Embrace learning, forward-planning and retrospection through regular progress reviews and documentation
Our interventions seek to contribute to inclusive urban governance and the quality of living through coordinated, complementary and competent actions with community groups, the civil society, public and, private sector agencies operating in Nairobi, Embu and Kisumu.  In partnership with UN Habitat, the agency has initiated a bio-sanitation initiative in cities in Africa – Bangui (Central African Republic), Blantyre (Malawi), Freetown (Sierra Leone), Yaoundé (Cameroun) and Kyotera (Uganda).
We place emphasis on a multi-level approach that focuses on a product (access to urban water, bio-sanitation and solid waste management services) and a raft of community-led processes (partnerships for change, integrated urban environmental planning, sanitation governance, human rights and urban services financing.)  Following the promulgation of a new constitution in Kenya, our policy advocacy efforts are designed to the domestication and progressive realization of provisions pertinent to economic and social rights, land, environment and devolved governance.
Currently, Umande Trust has introduced youth platform programmes for the Kenyan youth. With their partner SustainableEnergy, Umande Trust have just concludedan 18 month project on Inter-Ethnic Dialogue and Communities Pecefull Reconciliation which prepared the Kibera youth for the Kenyan 2013 elections. At the same time, Umande Trust with SE are running a youth empowerment programme called Walk, Run and Dance; a platform for youth to engage their government in service delivery and initiative for arts and sports. Youth takes the Baton for a Green Future is another project Umande runs that involve the youth.

A.T.E also has a separate department that handles school drama festival. This is dubbed the A.T.E faculty which has a capacity of five (5) A.T.E members mandated with the task of producing professional artistic pieces. The A.T.E faculty has so far taken two schools to the nationals namely Kisumu Boys’ High School and Sawagongo Secondary School with choral verses and plays.
Apart from the arts department, A.T.E engages in other projects within Kisumu County. These are programs initiated by members and facilitated by the same members with the sole objective of creating an all inclusive environment. These include:
  •  Youth Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) advocacy that encompasses youth sensitization on safer sexual acts in line with peer education.
  • Human rights advocacy in line with sexual minorities mostly in the Kisumu beaches, e.g. Dunga, Ndere Highland and Lwang’ni.
